Doxycycline hydrochloride is an active component of Doxicip 100 mg. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It slows the growth of bacteria by binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunits and possibly with 60 S ribosomal subunits. It inhibits the bacterial protein synthesis by blocking the binding of aminoacyl tRNA to the mRNA. It is a very useful medicine against Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria causing organism. Doxycycline also suppresses the concentration of free fatty acids and thus causes the suppression of the bacterial cell growth. It is used to treat acne, gonorrhea, periodontitis and other bacterial infections.
