The drug Ibrandronic acid is a type of bisphosphonate. It is also called Bondurant. This drug is commonly used to treat breast cancer that spread to the bone (secondary breast cancer).

Details

The drug is a potent amino bisphosphonate and has high bone affinity. Like other amino bisphosphonate, Ibrandronic acid reduces bone resorption and enhances mineralization resulting in an increase in bone mineral density. The reduction in bone turnover reduces the risk of further disruption to the microarchitecture of bone such as loss of connectivity in trabecular bone as a result of trabecular perforation.

How to use Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of plain water, while the patient is sitting or standing in an upright position. The patient should not lie down for 1 hour after taking Ibandronic acid.

Plain water is the only drink that should be taken with Ibandronic acid. Some mineral waters may have a higher concentration of calcium and therefore should not be used.

Dosage of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The recommended dose is one 150 mg film coated tablet once a month. The tablet should be taken on the same date each month.

Uses of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

  • Ibrandronic acid is used to strengthen bones in women who have gone through the menopause and have weak bones (osteoporosis) and in people with breast cancer that spread to the bones.
  • The drug is used to inhibit the loss of calcium from the bones and increase bone mass. Ibandronic acid is used to treat women with osteoporosis after menopause.
  • The drug is used to increase bone mass leading to stronger bones and reducing the risk of fractures in osteoporosis after menopause and in breast cancer which has spread to the bones.

Drug interactions of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The drug shows various kind of interaction mentioned as follows:

  • Antibiotics like aminoglycosides like neomycin and streptomycin.
  • Intake of Bonviva, exercise caution in co-administration with NSAIDs.

Contraindications of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The use of drug is contraindicated in:

  • People with hypersensitivity (allergy) to ibandronic acid.
  • People with low blood calcium (hypocalcaemia).
  • People with certain problems of esophagus (food pipe) like narrowing or difficulty in swallowing.
  • People with severely reduced kidney function.
  • Pregnant woman.
  • Breastfeeding woman.
  • People with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance.

Precautions of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The drug should be used with caution in people:

  • Having digestive problems such as stomach or intestinal ulcers, problems in swallowing, heart burn and acid reflux.
  • People with known  hypersensitivity to other bisphosphonates.
  • People with parathyroid gland problems like gland produce hormones which are important in calcium metabolism.
  • People with vitamin D deficiency.
  • People taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin.

Side effects of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

Some of the possible side effects of the drug are mentioned as follows:

  • A high temperature(fever).
  • Low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcaemia).
  • Irritation of food pipe (oesophagus).
  • Lowered sensitivity of the skin.
  • Headaches or dizziness.
  • Pain in bone.

Overdose of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

Overdosing should not be done. In case if overdosing symptoms occurs, contact to the doctor.

Missed dose of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The missed dose should be taken as soon as get remember. But if the time of next dose has been achieved, the missed does is skipped and the next dosing schedule is followed.

Storage conditions of Ibrandronic acid tablets:

The drug is stored at 2OC – 80C (in a refrigerator). The drug should be stored in the original package in order to protect from moisture. Keep the medication away from children and pets.
