Januvia is the medicine, meant to treat Type II diabetes as an adjunct with diet and exercise. In Januvia, Sitagliptin is the active constituent, which belongs to the class of diabetes drug called dipeptidyl peptidase 4(DPP-4 inhibitors). It works by increasing the extent of hormone incretin released by the intestine. This hormone raises insulin levels when the level of sugar is high. It is used for diabetes management along with exercise and diet.

What are the benefits of taking Januvia?

It is indicated in the treatment of diabetes II along with diet and exercise.

Contraindication

The use of Januvia is contraindicated in certain condition:

  • Should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (increased ketones in the blood or urine)
  • In case of pancreatitis
  • In case of severe kidney or liver disease
  • Children or adolescents under 18 years old
  • Breastfeeding women

Drug interaction

Avoid concomitant used of other sugar lowering agent such as insulin or sulphonylurease, combination leads to sever drop in sugar level. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include weakness, dizziness, headache, lethargy, confusion, irritability, hunger, irregularheartbeat, sweating.

Dose

The usual dose of this medication is 100 mg taken by mouth one time in a day with or without food.

What to do in case of missed dose?

 If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What to do in case of overdose?

Overdose symptoms include s extreme weakness, trouble speaking, tremors, stomach discomfort, blurred vision, sweating, misperception, and seizure.

Side effects

Some common side effects may include breathing passages problem, sore throat,   runny nose, cough, soreness in the back of the nose and throat and discomfort when swallowing, headache, flu-like symptom.

Symptoms of serious allergic reactions to JANUVIA, including low blood sugar level rash, hives, persistent stomach pain andpuffiness of the face, lips, tongue, and throat that may cause trouble in breathing or swallowing, can occur.
