Ocufen is a topical sterile dosage form, used in the inhibition of intraoperative miosis. It is also used to treat pain and swelling in the eye after surgery. It is recommended to place 4 drops before 2 hours of eye surgery to prevent miosis (constriction of pupil size).

Details

In ocufen eye drop, Flurbiprofen Sodium is the core drug, which is used to prevent miosis during eye operation. Flurbiprofen belongs to the NSAID (noni steroidal anti-inflammatory drug).It acts by inhibiting the activity of COX- I and COX- II enzyme. It decreases the formation of prostaglandin, which is responsible for causing swelling, inflammation.

Why to use Ocufen eye drop?

Contraindication

The use of Ocufen is contraindicatedin certain condition

  • In case of any allergy to Ocufen or any of its ingredients
  • In case of Pregnancy or Nursing mothers
  • In case of child
  • In case of any bleeding disorder

Drug interaction

Avoid intake of acetylcholine and Carbachol.

Storage

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from direct heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Do not keep expired medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Dosage

For prevention of miosis during an eye surgery, The recommended dose for Adults is one drop in the affected eye every 30 minutes start 2 hours before eye surgery(total of 4 drops should be placed in eye in 2 hours)

  • Before placing the drop into eye, first, wash hands. Slope the head back and, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to make a space. Drop the medicine into this space. Do not blink the eye. Keep the eyes closed for 1 or 2 minutes to allow the eye drop to be absorbed by the eye.
  • Immediately after using the eye drops, wash hands to remove any medicine that may be on them.

What to do in case of missed dose?

In case of missed dose, use the drop as come to know about it. However, if it is almost time for next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to regular dosing schedule.

What to do in case of overdose?

Overdose of this drug, may leads in collapse in breathing. So avoid overdose of this drug.

Side effects

Some undesirable side effects of this drug include burning sensation, ocular irritation, hurting, mydriasis (dilation of the pupil), and increased bleeding affinity of ocular tissues, Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness.

Safety tips

Some safety tips for the patients while using this drug

  • Before an eye surgery,use one bottle for each eye. Use of the same bottle of eye drops for both eyes is not suggested.
  • Do not touch the tip of a dropper, as it may contaminant the drug.
  • Eye burning is expected after application of this eye drop for a short time.
